The 28th Maui Trade Dollar features one of Maui’s most beloved marine creatures, the Hawaiian green sea turtle, or Honu, swimming in the pristine waters of Makena’s Turtle Town.

It’s hard to believe a year has come and gone. The saying is true, time sure flies when you’re having fun! As a parent of two teenagers, there’s always the potential for adventure, especially when you live on Maui. So I often find myself hiking, swimming, snorkeling, and surfing with my boys. One of our favorite things to do is head to the south side of the island to snorkel at Makena’s Turtle Town.This beautiful, rugged area is known for its high population of Hawaiian green sea turtles, or Honu. The pristine waters offer an abundance of algae and sea-grass for the Honu to feed on while the underwater reefs and rocks provide them the perfect sleeping spots.

Watching these graceful and majestic creatures glide through the water just a few feet away never ceases to amaze me.  It’s no surprise they’re considered one of the most beloved creatures on Maui,and the inspiration for the 2019 Maui Trade Dollar!
